This workshop delves deeper into the concept of ‘Non-linear Sequencers,’ which was one of the key topics at the 2024 WeSA Gathering.

Overview:

A ‘sequencer’ typically plays a set number of steps in sequential order. For instance, a sequencer with four steps would play in the order of “1,2,3,4.” However, a ‘non-linear sequencer’ allows for variation in the playback order. For example, in a 16-step sequencer, there is only one way to play the steps sequentially from 1 to 16. In contrast, a non-linear sequencer can rearrange the order, producing countless variations. Even by applying simple randomization, interesting results can emerge. Furthermore, incorporating simple or complex algorithms can yield unpredictable outcomes. This workshop invites participants to explore these creative possibilities using Max8.

Gazaebal is a sound artist based in Seoul. He co-founded Tacit Group in 2008, gaining international recognition for media works that merge technology and art. He continues to actively produce new works today. Recently, his solo project UN/Readable Sound was selected as ‘New Work of the Year’ by the Korea Arts & Culture Foundation, and he also presented the exhibition Sound : AL. Since 2014, he has been serving as the director of the WeSA Festival.
