Overview:

Computers serve as excellent ‘hubs’ that integrate music with non-musical elements. We live in a world where everything around us can be quantified and digitized, and we can use computers to translate objects and phenomena into sound.

In this workshop, we will explore ‘data sonification’ based on computers. Participants will record data using brainwaves, smartphone sensors, etc., and apply the collected data to various sound synthesis techniques. By combining the physical properties of the data with the characteristics of sound synthesis methods, participants will enhance their intuitive artistic abilities and sound design skills.

The first half of the workshop will focus on recording data using Max8, while the second half will apply the collected data to sound synthesis techniques such as additive synthesis and frequency modulation, exploring the basics of sound synthesis and its data-driven applications.

Instructor Introduction:

For composer WONWOORI, computer music is a medium for understanding the world around us and humanity. Our world and human beings are often too complex to understand fully. WONWOORI substitutes data of the subject being interpreted with the simplest element of music, the sine wave, and analyzes it. Through this process, the composer finds inspiration for creation and strives to place the analyzed subject at the center of the artistic medium. In particular, WONWOORI focuses on subjects that are often marginalized in the arts and expands human possibilities through music and technology. Since 2019, WONWOORI has been researching the mechanical hearing of cochlear implant users, exploring what the essence of music is through the exchange between physiological and mechanical hearing.
